ある小学1年生の男児は、地震発生時に自宅に1人でいたが、学校で教えられていた通り、避難所まで自力で避難した。また、小学6年生の男児は、2年生の弟と2人で自宅にいた。「逃げようよ」という弟をなだめ、自宅の3階まで上り難を逃れた。授業で見たＶＴＲを思い出したからだ。既に自宅周辺は数十センチの水量で、大人でも歩行が困難になっており、自分たちではとても無理だと判断した。彼らは、自分たちの身を自ら守ったのである。
